Carnelian
I drew this image back in 1986 and, as such, it predates the Stone Dance. It arose spontaneously from my subconscious and I don't even myself fully understand its iconography. It is the image I have chosen to put on the home page of this site. I will make some comments about this image.
The mask Carnelian is wearing is of blue stone. It was of this material rather than gold that I imagined all the masks of the Masters were made. Only recently have I come to realize that this blue face prefigures the end of the Stone Dance...
The breastplate bears at its centre the 'nu' - symbol of desolation, around it glyphs showing titles. The glyph above his head identifies that this is Carnelian. In the first couple of registers are the components 'stone' + 'blue' over 'face', thus 'blue-stone face' which was how I originally wrote the Quyan 'mahar' meaning "a Lord of the Chosen". The third register reads as 'stone' + 'red' which is 'carnelian'. The final register has 'face' with the 'stone' component superimposed which is 'marakal' or 'mask' which at that time I thought wrote 'marua' or 'House (of the Chosen)' and the 'dragonfly'...
You cannot help noticing that the heraldic dragonfly is everywhere on the image. This was because I initially believed that Carnelian was of the House of the Dragonfly, until I discovered that his cypher was the chameleon... It was Jaspar and House Imago who inherited the dragonfly cypher...
