Suth household evacuated from parts of the Hold. Blue tattooed sailors come up from the baran and begin to chop down columns for masts - tearing up floors. This salvaged material is then carted down to the quay. Repair work begins on the baran.

Suth household roped in to help with the destruction of their home. Carnelian persuades his uncle Crail [65] to leave a room that is about to be destroyed. Food begins to be taken from the Hold storerooms and packed for the baran. Carnelian goes to see his father, but is turned away. Keal describes the baran to his brother, Carnelian. Carnelian meets with his father. Suth says that Crail will go with them but that Ebeny has insisted that she will remain behind.

Carnelian and the rest of the Masters are ritually prepared for their journey. Carnelian learns that his father has handed Crail over to Aurum and that, during the punishment, the old man died. Leaving the Tower in the Sea, they pass up through the 'purple factory' to begin their journey along the Great Sea Road.

During the confusion, Carnelian's face is seen by one of the Marula. To save the man's life, he decides to say nothing. Suth is wounded.

Carnelian and the other Masters encounter signs that plague is nearby, but they push on. That night they stop at a watchtower overlooking the ruins of an ancient city and discuss history and religion. Suth's condition deteriorates and the Masters help Carnelian carry him down to his chamber.

Carnelian and the other Masters reach the edge of the marsh that stretch from the shores of the lake in which sits the City at the Gates. A Maruli is caught by Aurum creeping around with a knife. He is the same man who saw Carnelian's face unmasked on the night of the assassination attempt. Aurum cuts his throat.

Carnelian and the other Masters ride along a causeway into the City at the Gates. In the great market of the Wheel, the Brotherhood make a second attempt on Suth's life. They pass through the Canyon of the Three Gates where Tain is handed over to the quarantine. Carnelian sees the hidden valley of Osrakum for the first time. They are met by the Grand Sapient Immortality who takes Suth with him into the Labyrinth so as to attempt to save his life. Left on his own with Jaspar, Carnelian takes a Kharon bone boat to his ancestral home, Coomb Suth. There he is eventually met by his Aunt Fey. He spends his first night in Osrakum.

Receiving a letter from his grandmother, Urquentha, Carnelian determines to go and see her. Fey provides him with transport up to the Eyries, palaces built high in the Sacred Wall. Carnelian meets with Urquentha. Vennel is granted an audience by Ykoriana. Jaspar spends the day being debriefed on his mission by his father, the Lord Imago. The Lord Imago sends letters to the various leaders of his faction and begins to make preparations to climb up into the Sky.

Carnelian discovers the realities underlying the luxury of his palace. Anger rouses him to action. He confronts the Lords of the Second Lineage and demands that Spinel give up the House Seal. This Master informs Carnelian that, apparently, the Lord Imago has been murdered by one of his slaves. Suth, in the Halls of Thunder, sends a message to his son. When Carnelian receives the message, he does not know what to do.

Carnelian goes to Coomb Imago to see Jaspar. He witnesses Jaspar crucifying his slaves. Together they take a bone boat across to the Plain of Thrones where Carnelian discovers that it was Jaspar who murdered his own father. They enter the Labyrinth. They climb the Pillar of Heaven. Wishing to escape the company of Jaspar, Carnelian pushes on up to the Halls of Thunder with the consequence that he ends up suffering from the 'sky sickness'.

The sybling Quenthas comes to dress him in a court robe. Carnelian climbs to the Thronehall where he meets his father who has been appointed Regent. Suth takes Carnelian to see the dying God Emperor.

The ruhuimur of the Red Ichorians are woken and their twin legion begins to prepare for the Rebirth. The Ochre and other tributaries have all arrived in the City at the Gates. The Quenthas are sent by Suth to keep Carnelian amused.

Bored, Carnelian gets the Quenthas to give him a tour of the Sunhold. Carnelian discovers a trapdoor and persuades the sisters to accompany him down into the darkness. They explore the ancient, ruined Halls of Thunder. Eventually they reach the forbidden moon-eyed door. That night, having returned to his chamber, Carnelian dreams of the moon-eyed door.

A detachment of Red Ichorians arrive in the Sunhold, sent by Suth to protect Carnelian. From this moment on, in anticipation of the Election, the Sunhold is under the jurisdiction and protection of the Red Ichorians. Carnelian creeps off to explore the ruined halls beneath the Sunhold. He dares to enter through the moon-eyed door into the Library of the Wise. There he meets Osidian, though he does not know who he is.

After many meetings with Osidian, Carnelian and he descend the Quyan Stair on an expedition into the Yden. They decide to spend the night in a shrine to the Wind Lord. Carnelian has a disturbing dream.

In Coomb Suth, Fey is crucified. Carnelian and Osidian spend their first morning in the Yden. They make love.

Carnelian and Osidian spend a second, idyllic day in the Yden. The Legates quit their fortresses and begin their journeys to Osrakum. The gates in the Ringwall are opened. Tain completes his quarantine in the Canyon of the Three Gates. He reaches Coomb Suth in time to witness Fey crucified. More of the Lords of the Great begin to arrive in the Halls of Thunder. A new, more extensive household including Spinel and Tain is sent from Coomb Suth to the Halls of Thunder taking with them a court robe for Carnelian.

Carnelian and Osidian spend a third day in the Yden. The God Emperor Kumatuya dies and Ykoriana becomes Regent. The rest of the Chosen are summoned to the Election. Carnelian and Osidian witness the processions of the Chosen moving along the Ydenrim.

Carnelian and Osidian begin their journey back to the Sky, stopping for the night in a cave halfway up the Pillar of Heaven. No longer regent, Suth moves back to the quarters in the Sunhold reserved for He-who-goes-before and discovers that Carnelian has vanished. Spinel and the other Suth Lords arrive in the Halls of Thunder.

Bitterly, Tain tells his story of his experiences of the quarantine. Through him, Carnelian learns of Fey's crucifixion. Distressed, he feels compelled to go and see his father. He waits for him all day in his father's chamber. Carnelian witnesses his father taking the drug which the Wise have given him to be able to perform his functions though his wound is not healed. Suth tells Carnelian that Jaspar and his faction have defected to Ykoriana's camp. Suth appears close to cracking. The tributaries begin to be moved from the City at the Gates into the Plain of Thrones in Osrakum.

Suth Opalid comes to tell Carnelian about Spinel's defection. Carnelian goes to to tell his father. In the Sun in Splendour, they discuss what they can do to salvage the Election.

Election Day. The Chosen cast their votes in the Chamber of the Three Lands. Carnelian discovers Osidian's true identity. Osidian is elected God Emperor. Carnelian and Tain make up.

Carnelian miserable. His father comes to see him, delighted with the result of the Election. Osidian comes to see Carnelian who forgives him for his deceptions. Carnelian persuades him to go one last time down to the Yden. Left alone, Carnelian writes a letter to his father explaining their disappearance.

From the Halls of Thunder the Rains can be seen approaching. Carnelian and Osidian descend once more to the Yden. Swimming, they are taken by operatives of the Brotherhood of the Wheel and carried unconscious to an abandoned Kharon boathouse beyond the Ydenrim. Rains reach Morunasa in the koppie of the Twostone. Suth forces Carnelian's letter from Tain earlier than Carnelian intended. Suth and the rest of the Masters begin their descent into the Labyrinth in preparation for the Apotheosis.

The sybling Hanuses come to the boathouse to vent their spleen. They remove Carnelian and Osidian's blood-rings to give Ykoriana as proof that the Brotherhood have accomplished their side of the bargain she made with them. Then the syblings supervise Carnelian and Osidian being drugged and put in the funerary urns. Unconscious, they are transported to the Valley of the Gate. Meanwhile, Suth is fretting as his search in the Yden for Carnelian and Osidian yields no sign of them.
