These diagrams show the initial form of the Red Caves, or as I termed it then, the Pomegranate Court. Eventually the circular shape was compressed down so that the galleries and barracks are cut into the sides of the Canyon which runs at a relatively constant width from the Ichorian Gate to the Black Gate and which is shown in the diagram here. I have included this early form of the Red Caves here really to show the structures which are described in The Chosen. The strata which are typical of many legionary fortresses were originally modelled on those constructed here by the necessity of accomodating personnel and equipment in a restricted space. The diagram showing a typical huimur or 'dragon' cave shows not only the space in which the leviathan is stabled, but also the separation of its tower into its two major components - this being required by the difficulties of assembling it on the huimur's back. One point that should perhaps be made is how small the space is in which a huimur is stabled. This is because the creature is supported erect as it 'sleeps' in a form of suspended animation induced by drugs. It is by this means that the Wise manage to extend by a great margin its natural lifespan.
