Maps - The Purple Factory

notebook 7/ page 56

This lies in a valley a little west along the coast from Thuyakalrul.

A purple dye much prized by the Masters (especially the Wise) is here extracted from the bodies of ammonites.

This industrial process uses a system of vats which climb up the sides of the valley. Products and residues are flushed down through these vats by means of sluices which divert a river through the vats. Labour is supplied by sartlar.

It is the resulting effluent which runs into the sea which appears to be a river of blood.
