I am appearing on the Book CafĂ© at 13:15 on Monday 13th of April where I will be talking about Eastercon and about the Stone Dance. This will be a live show, but I imagine it will be available through iPlayer for a few days after broadcast… Unfortunately, this is going to clash with one of the panels I was on at Eastercon – Terraforming vs Pantropy. I am disappointed about this and should have seen it coming…
details for hearing the programme are:
Mon 13 Apr 2009
13:15

Nice interview. Funny you mention “Lord of the Flies”, for when I was reading The Standing Dead, I have been wondering more than once if you had read it. Is it possible that you were inspired by the book in some (minor) way?
thank you. Yes, I most definitely have read it – though it occurs to me that when I’ve been asked in interviews who my influences are, I don’t think I would have thought to mention William Golding. Lord of the Flies had a profound effect on me perhaps because it confirmed my suspicion that human ‘civilization’ is really only a veneer. This is a theme in the Stone Dance. Along with Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Lord of the Flies casts its shadow particularly over The Standing Dead; the former being directly referred to, the latter being indirectly referenced in the Isle of Flies… As for major or minor, who knows… more and more I am distrustful of what I may claim to have influenced my writing – let’s just leave it that both of these works have been cooking in my subconscious for decades…

Any idea where to find this on the dial? Since we’ve not got internet access at my home during Easter, we might try it with the radio (if the wind is the right direction)…
good point *rummages* phew! It was surprisingly hard hunting down the frequencies. These are: FM 92.6 – 94.7, MW 810, 585 – the last of these might be Dumfries… close to Northern Ireland…? (have added these details to blog above)
